Course description

EPSY 5199, Readings in gifted education is designed to expose students to current controversies within the field of gifted education. The readings were chosen because they are provocative in the hopes that we can stimulate some interesting discussions about philosophy and practice in gifted education. I hope that we will have many lively discussions and differences of opinion as you read some of the most thought provoking journal articles published in the past 10 years.

Course Objectives

Course Goals

  1. Students will read current articles related to philosophies of gifted education.
  2. Students will discuss current controversies in gifted education.
  3. Students will critically examine crucial issues within the field of gifted education.
  4. Students will develop rhetorical skills.
  5. Students will express their opinions and well developed arguments in a written format.

Course Requirements

Assignments

Each unit, you will read an article from the field of gifted education, and you are required to post at least three messages per unit to the Class Discussions section of the WebCT page. The heart of this course is the discussions that we have. Each unit will last approximately 1-1.5 weeks. All articles are available on WebCT – you do not need to purchase any textbook for this course. In addition to posting three responses to each of the articles, you are required to complete a final persuasive essay.
