NASSP National Task Forces
The NASSP Board of Directors has voted to establish three major new national task forces, focusing on different areas: NCLB for Middle Level and High Schools, Urban Education for Middle Level and High Schools, and Principal Preparation Programs for Middle Level and High School Principals. These task forces are charged with addressing timely and pertinent issues and topics which affect the leaders of middle level and senior high schools, as well as the various programs designed to prepare the principals of our nation's schools. Each task force will have 12-15 members, composed primarily of administrators, and with an emphasis on diversity of participation. Application information is available at:

Schools as Centers of Community
The KnowledgeWorks Foundation is conducting a nationwide search for schools exemplifying the growing trend in school design/construction toward greater community use. A selection committee will choose schools that best integrate the community through their design and facilities to join the Foundation's "Schools as Centers of Community Honor Society." Information about them will be exhibited as part of a new design gallery hosted by the Foundation on its website. One school among those chosen will be selected to receive the Foundation's "Award for Excellence," and receive a $5,000 grant. Any public or private school in the United States is eligible to apply. LI-COR Genomics Education Matching Funds Grants
LI-COR Biosciences will award up to 50 individual institutions a total of $1.25 million in grants on a matching-funds basis to foster college and high school programs in genomic science. Amounts of matching-funds grants range from $25,000 to $41,250, to be used toward the purchase of a complete LI-COR DNA Analysis System, including instruments, software and reagents, so that students of biology and related fields have the opportunity to enjoy hands-on experience with cutting-edge technology. Nellie Mae Education Foundation
The Nellie Mae Education Foundation provides grants and technical assistance to programs focusing on academic enrichment, college planning, advising, preparation and retention support for low SES students in grades 5 through 14 as well as adult learners.
The foundation conducts a comprehensive assessment and funds only programs that are aligned with the strategies within each of these program initiatives: adult literacy, college prep, minority high achievement, and out-of-school programs. Applications are ongoing.

The WHO Foundation
Women Helping Others nationally supports grass-roots charities which serve the overlooked needs of women and children. Grants are provided to organizations serving women and/or children in the United States and Puerto Rico. Specific projects and programs addressing health, education and social service needs are their priority. In order to qualify for funding, an organization must have 501(c)(3) non-profit status through the U.S. Internal Revenue Service and be qualified to receive deductible charitable contributions. Organizations must have been incorporated for a minimum of three years prior to application. Preference will be given to organizations with an operating budget of $2 million or less, those not dependent upon government grants, and those with greater organizational program costs than personnel costs. The majority of grants range from $2,500 to $15,000.

Charter Schools Facilities Incentives Grants
The Charter Schools Facilities Incentive Grants Program from the Office of Innovation and Improvement (OII) will provide five grants ranging from $42 million to $10 million to establish or enhance state-run, per-pupil programs that focus on facilities aid for charter schools. Robert Wood Johnson Foundation
The Local Initiative Funding Partners grant program supports innovations in community-based projects to improve the health and health care available to society's most vulnerable people. Awards range from $100,000 to $500,000 over a three-year period. The deadline for application is July 14, 2004.

The 9th annual Summer Contests, sponsored by the Houghton Mifflin Company, will begin on June 25. The KidViews and Brain Teasers challenges for kids and the TeacherViews contest for K-8 educators will run for eight weeks.

Davidson Institute for Talent Development Fellowships
The Davidson Institute for Talent Development is offering high achieving young people across the country the opportunity to be named as 2005 Davidson Fellows. Individuals named as Davidson Fellows receive a $50,000, $25,000 or $10,000 scholarship in recognition of their outstanding achievements in the areas of science, technology, mathematics, music, literature and/or philosophy. Each submission must be an original piece of work recognized by experts in the field as "significant" and it must have the potential to make a positive contribution to society.

To be eligible, applicants must be under the age of 18 as of Oct. 1, 2005, and a U.S. citizen or permanent U.S. resident. There is no minimum age for eligibility. The scholarship must be used at an accredited institute of learning. The deadline to apply is March 25, 2005. Each year, the Davidson Fellows are honored at a September reception in Washington, D.C. Each application is evaluated on its scope and quality, level of significance, and the applicant's depth of knowledge and understanding of the work and related domain area.

The Institute of Museum and Library Services
This organization (IMLS) has updated its National Leadership Grant program, including the clarification of program categories to improve consistency across agencies and to help museums and libraries improve their ability to enhance lifetime learning.

The 2005 National Leadership Grant guidelines will be available on the IMLS Web site in October of 2004. The deadline for all National Leadership Grant categories is February 1, 2005. Grants will be awarded in mid-September. Applicants may request $25,000 to $1,000,000.

National Science Teachers Association
The National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) is now accepting nominations for the 2005 Delta Education/CPO Science Inquiry-based Science Teaching Excellence Awards. Full time science teachers in grades K-12 who successfully use inquiry-based science to enhance teaching and learning in the classroom are eligible to apply for an award in one of three grade categories: elementary (preK-5); middle level (6-8); and high school (9-12). A judging committee chosen by NSTA will review submissions and select the winners. Application deadline: October 15, 2004.

Campaign for the Civic Mission of Schools
This project, a long-term effort to renew and elevate civic education in the schools, will work with coalition partners to bring about changes in state, local, and national policy that implement the recommendations in The Civic Mission of Schools report. The Campaign has issued a Request for Proposals seeking applications from state-level coalitions for grants in two categories: $150,000 over two years, and $20,000 over two years. The deadline for proposals for the larger grant is June 18, 2004; the deadline for the smaller grant is August 2, 2004.

Presidential Freedom Scholarships
Two students from every high school in the country are eligible to receive these $1,000 scholarships in recognition of their outstanding service to the community. This program is administered by the Corporation for National & Community Service's Learn and Serve America program and will award up to 8,000 scholarships. Nominations are open to high school juniors or seniors during the 2003-2004 academic year. The deadline for applications is July 16, 2004.
