Braitmayer Foundation Grants
The Braitmayer Foundation is offering grants of up to $10,000 to fund a broad range of K-12 education programs, with special interest in curricular reform initiatives and professional development opportunities for teachers, particularly those encouraging people of high ability and diverse background to enter and remain in K-12 teaching. All K-12 schools in the United States, as well as independent 501(c)(3) organizations with an interest education, are eligible to apply. Application Deadline: 11/15/2004.

Robert H. Michel Civic Education Grants
Next year, the Dirksen Congressional Center will award grants totaling $35,000 to fund practical classroom strategies improving the quality of civics teaching and learning with a special emphasis on the role of Congress in the federal government. Grants are intended to assist in the development of innovative curricula that will improve the quality of civics instruction through designing lesson plans and student activities and applying instructional technology in the classroom. Teachers and teacher-led student teams in grades 6-12 are eligible to apply, as are independent individuals and organizations with an interest in curricular development. American History Workshops for Professional Development
The National Endowment for the Humanities is now offering K-12 educators individual grants of $500 to attend its Landmarks of American History Workshops. These are weeklong residences for scholarship and discussion of various topics in American history, conducted at significant historical sites. All K-12 classroom teachers in public, private, parochial, and charter schools within the United States and its Territories are eligible to apply, as well as administrators, librarians, substitute teachers, and classroom paraprofessionals at these schools.

Dow Awards
The Dow Chemical Company is offering up to $20 million in grant funds to support proposed initiatives in the areas of math and science, teacher training, and parental involvement for K-12 school districts. Grant proposals should focus on giving K-12 students science and engineering experiences, giving teachers the training to provide these experiences, and fostering parental and community involvement. School districts and school boards across the country and programs that promote systemic education reform in math and science are eligible to apply. Special attention is given to school districts around communities where Dow facilities are located. Application Deadline: Varies

Staples Foundation for Learning Grants
The Staples Foundation for Learning plans to award grants of $5,000 to $25,000 to public schools and other community non-profits individual for the purpose of funding a broad range of job training and education programs for disadvantaged youth and/or students with disabilities. All public schools and 501(c)(3) organizations in the United States are eligible to apply. Application Deadlines: 8/2/2004, 9/30/2004.

Sol Hirsch Education Fund Grants
The National Weather Association is awarding grants of $500 to individual K-12 teachers with proposals to educate their students in meteorology. Past recipients have used the funds for a range of purposes from purchasing scientific materials or equipment for the classroom, to attending relevant workshops or conferences, or taking an accredited course in atmospheric sciences. All teachers in grades K-12 in the US are eligible to apply. Application Deadline: 8/1/2004.

Ezra Jack Keats Foundation Grants
The Ezra Jack Keats Foundation is offering "mini-grants" of $350 to school and public libraries for programs that encourage children's literacy and creativity. Programs under consideration include innovative or noteworthy workshops, lectures and festivals, as well as programs targeted at parents and pre-school children. Special priority will be given to any programs relating to the work of Ezra Jack Keats. Applications forms are available online, and can be printed out and mailed to the foundation. Barbara Bush Foundation Grants
The Barbara Bush Foundation's 2005 National Grant Cycle plans to offer grants of up to $65,000 to schools and other nonprofit organizations to fund the development and/or expansion of literacy programs designed to build families of readers. Proposal components should include: reading instruction for parents and other primary caregivers, literacy or pre-literacy instruction for children, and intergenerational activities where parents and children have the opportunity to learn and read together.
