Jack Kent Cooke Foundation
Jack Kent Cooke Foundation's Innovation Fund provides grants to nonprofit organizations to spark the creation or expansion of innovative education programs in a particular field. For 2005 grants, the Foundation is inviting proposals from non-remedial, out-of-school programs teaching critical reading and/or writing skills to elementary or middle school students. Programs should be designed to help students build high-level reading and/or writing skills to help them excel in rigorous academic environments as they mature. Programs must operate in the United States and serve low-to-moderate-income students. The Foundation encourages applications from rural communities, small towns, and other underserved areas. Each grant will total between $100,000 and $200,000 and may cover one or two years of program work. The Foundation anticipates awarding three grants, which will be announced in March 2005. Proposals are due October 15, 2004.

Grant Opportunity for K-5 Math Teachers
The Mathematics Education Trust of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) announces the Irene Etkowicz Eizen Grant for Emerging Leaders in Elementary School Mathematics. The grant will award up to $6,000 to help educators teach mathematics more effectively at the elementary level by deepening their mathematical content knowledge and teaching abilities. The recipient of the Eizen grant will work collaboratively with other teachers in the same district to improve mathematics instruction. The recipient is expected to become a teacher-leader in mathematics and to work to develop expertise in specific mathematics content aligned with NCTM's Principles and Standards for School Mathematics. Recipients should be confident in teaching mathematics and routinely extend the classroom beyond the limits of the textbook with the goal of furnishing comprehensive, in-depth instruction to elementary school students. YouthActionNet
YouthActionNet ( http://www.youthactionnet.org/ ) is offering awards to youth leaders and their emerging projects that promote social change and connect youth with local communities. Final selections are made following a peer review process in which previous award winners select the next round of awardees. Award recipients will receive $500 and are eligible to participate in an international capacity-building workshop. The grant program is open to all young people aged 18 to 29. Individuals applying must have a leadership role in a youth-led initiative that works to create positive change in their community. Applications must be written in English. Ten winners will be selected in this round of funding.

NASA Urban and Rural Community Enrichment Grants
NASA will train core educator teams to conduct interdisciplinary aerospace activities in school districts. The Coca-Cola Foundation will provide funds for new solutions to problems that impede education and to support effective existing programs. Examples of eligible programs include classroom teaching and learning programs, innovative L12 public school programs, teacher development programs, and projects dealing with specific activities in K-12 classrooms. Dirksen Congressional Center Grants
The Dirksen Congressional Center is offering grants assisting teachers, curriculum developers, and others, to improve the quality of civics instruction. The Department of Educational Studies and the Gifted Education Resource Institute at Purdue University invites applications for a fiscal year assistant clinical professor position to begin July 1, 2005. Applicants should hold a doctorate in gifted education or related field. Responsibilities include coordinating, managing, and directing engagement and outreach efforts for the Gifted Education Resource Institute (GERI); coordinating the gifted education licensure program and GERI professional development initiatives; teaching graduate and undergraduate courses in education; and conducting scholarly work and generate new state, national, and international engagement initiatives.

Heart of America Foundation Poster and Essay Contests
The Heart of America Foundation invites students in grades 1-12 to submit posters and essays illustrating the importance one of its "Ten Core American Values." The poster contest is open to students in grades 1-5, while the essay contest is open to students in grades 6-12. Posters in any medium should be a minimum size of 8"x11". Fulbright Memorial Fund Teacher Program
The Fulbright Memorial Fund (FMF) Teacher Program, administered jointly by the Japanese-United States Exchange Commission and the Institute of International Education, offers teachers and administrators in grades 1-12 an opportunity for a fully funded three-week professional development opportunity in Japan. FMF participants travel with other outstanding educators, learn about Japanese culture and education, and return home to implement a self-designed plan to share their knowledge and experience with their students, colleagues, and community. American History Workshops for Professional Development
The National Endowment for the Humanities is offering K-12 educators individual grants of $500 to attend its Landmarks of American History Workshops. These are week-long residence programs of scholarship and discussion on various topics in American history, conducted at significant historical sites. Dow Awards
The Dow Chemical Company is offering $20 million in grant funds to support proposed initiatives focusing on math and science, teacher training, and parental involvement for K-12 school districts. Grant proposals should focus on giving K-12 students science and engineering experiences, giving teachers the training to provide these experiences, and fostering parental and community involvement. School districts and school boards nationwide, as well as programs that promote systemic education reform in math and science, are eligible to apply. NEA Youth Leaders for Literacy Grants
The National Education Association will award 20 grants of $500 each to student-led initiatives through Youth Leaders for Literacy, a joint program of the NEA and Youth Service America (YSA). The program encourages and celebrates literacy service by America's young people (ages 5-21) and honors them for doing reading-related activities that benefit others. Grant applications should propose youth leadership in developing and implementing a project beginning on NEA's Read Across America Day in March and culminating on YSA's National Youth Service
Day in April. Winners will be announced in December 2004. Anyone under 21 is eligible to apply, either individually or in groups.

Department of Education Magnet Schools Assistance Grants
The Department of Education's Office of Innovation and Improvement will award grants of $250,000 to $3.5 million to projects that work toward the desegregation of public schools by supporting the development and implementation of magnet schools that assist in the achievement of systemic reforms and provide all students with the opportunity to meet challenging academic content and student academic achievement standards. The program supports capacity developmentthe ability of a school to help all its students meet more challenging standardsthrough professional development and other activities that will enable the continued operation of the magnet schools at a high performance level after funding ends. Finally, the program supports the implementation of courses of instruction in magnet schools that strengthen students' knowledge of academic subjects and their grasp of tangible and marketable vocational skills. Local education agencies or consortia that are implementing court-ordered or federally approved voluntary desegregation plans that include magnet schools are eligible to apply. The Department of Education's Office of Innovation and Improvement awards grants of $100,000 to $1 million to national, regional, statewide and local projects working to recruit and retain highly qualified mid-career professionals, paraprofessionals, and recent graduates of institutions of higher education to teach in high-need K-12 schools. Grants also seek to encourage the development and expansion of alternative routes to certification under state-approved programs that enable individuals to be eligible for teacher certification within a reduced period of time, relying on the experience, expertise, and academic qualifications of an individual or other factors in lieu of traditional course work in the field of education. Through its stores, Barnes & Noble provides funding to local and regional efforts to promote literacy and the arts in K-12 education. Proposals should include a literacy or arts component that fosters both student achievement and community growth. Grant recipients must plan to promote the program with Barnes & Noble and be willing to work with the local store or stores on in-store programming. Potential applicants should visit a store in their area to receive more information. A list of stores nationwide is provided on the Barnes & Noble website.
