MLK Day Service Grants
In honor of Martin Luther King Jr., 30-40 grants are available from the Points of Light Foundation and the Corporation for National Service in the amounts of $2,500, $5,000 and $10,000 for projects honoring and celebrating Dr. King's life and work and that motivate Americans to observe the MLK Day holiday through service and implement high quality, high visibility service projects that engages volunteers in meaningful activities and strengthen communities on January 17, 2005. This grant competition is open to Foundation members and nonmembers. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis (Monday, Dec. 6th, 13th, 20th) and will be awarded on a rolling basis between Dec. 10th and 23rd. Volvo Butterfly Award for Child Heroes
Volvo is currently accepting nominations for the Butterfly Award in honor of Alexandra Scott, founder of Alex's Lemonade Stand, whose eponymous founder was diagnosed with cancer at the age of four and started a lemonade stand to raise money for childhood cancer research. The Butterfly Award honors other such child heroes who have shown extraordinary conscience, care and character in helping others. The award is a $25,000 contribution to a charity selected by the winning child hero and his or her family. The Butterfly Award recipient and family members will also have a chance to attend the final Volvo for life Awards ceremony in New York City as special guests. National School and Business Partnerships Awards
The Council for Corporate & School Partnerships is now accepting applications for the 2005 National School and Business Partnerships Award, which recognizes outstanding examples of collaboration between businesses and schools to improve the student educational experience. Applications due January 28, 2005.

Lucent Global Science Scholars Competition
The Lucent Global Science Scholars Program is an annual academic competition sponsored by the Lucent Technologies Foundation for students who demonstrate excellence in the sciences and plan to pursue a career in information and communications technologies. Recipients spend a week in Murray Hill, New Jersey, with researchers and scientists and fellow Global Science Scholars at the headquarters of Lucent Technologies and its world-renowned research and development arm, Bell Labs. In addition to attending the Summit, the winning Scholars receive a US$5,000 award. When an appropriate placement can be found, Global Science Scholars are offered internships at a Bell Labs or Lucent Technologies facility in their home country.

Toyota TAPESTRY Grants
The 2005 Toyota TAPESTRY program will award 50 grants of up to $10,000 each and a minimum of 20 mini-grants of $2,500 each to K-12 science teachers with proposals for innovative science projects that can be implemented over a one-year period. Proposals should demonstrate creativity and vision, and model a novel way of presenting science. All K-12 teachers of science residing in the U.S. or its territories are eligible to apply, as are elementary teachers who teach science in a self-contained classroom setting or as teaching specialists. Application deadline: January 19, 2005.

2005 Idea of America Essay Contest for High School Juniors
The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) invites all eligible high school juniors to enter the 2005 Idea of America Essay Contest. Open to 11th-grade students and 16- and 17-year-old home-schooled students, the 2005 Idea of America Essay Contest offers a cash prize of $5,000 for the author of the winning essay. Five national finalists will each receive cash prizes of $1,000. The deadline for entries is April 15, 2005. For the 2005 contest students will answer the question, "Describe totalitarianism by comparing the goals, methods, and results of fascism and communism. How were the tenets of these totalitarian movements different from the ideals that unite Americans? How did the ideals embodied in the American founding prevail?"
