Schools as Centers of Community: A National Search for Excellence
Each year the KnowledgeWorks Foundation and its partners search across the country for excellent schools that successfully model the growing trend to build schools as centers of community. The top selected school, chosen by a panel of national experts, receives the "Richard W. Riley Award for Excellence" and a $5,000 grant. The panel also selects several schools with innovative design elements and initiatives to be members of the "Schools as Centers of Community Honor Society" which will be included on the National Search website. National Endowment for the Arts

Excellence in Summer Learning Award
The Center for Summer Learning announces its annual Excellence in Summer Learning Award which recognizes outstanding summer programs that demonstrate a commitment to and promote academic achievement for students in Kindergarten through 12th grades. Each year, this award is given to an organization based on its history and mission, need, goals and objectives, organization and management, staff development, community and family involvement, and research and evaluation. Human Rights Scholarship
Amnesty International USA's Patrick Stewart Human Rights Scholarship are awarded to promising student human rights activists to complete summer internships or other creative human rights projects in the U.S. or abroad. Most combine development of activist skills with training or research, typically last from 4 weeks to 3 months, and range from $600 to $1,800 to be used for travel, lodging, meals, etc. The scholarship is open to high school, college and graduate students of any nationality attending U.S. schools and to U.S. citizens studying abroad. Public Library Immigrant Program Funding
The MetLife Foundation Reading America Program is designed to use literature, film, and the neutral ground of the library to stimulate discussion that positively affects the relationship between the generations, especially those of new immigrant families. Applications are encouraged from public libraries of all sizes as well as libraries that have not previously engaged in systematic outreach to newcomer families. Applicant libraries must work with one or more community organizations as partners. Libraries selected to participate in the program will receive a cash grant of $5,000 to help initiate the program and cover their expenses. Deadline: March 4, 2005
