Soliciting identification information from parents can be problematic so we recommend a form that doesn't ask whether or not parents think their child is "gifted." The instrument, entitled Things My Child Likes to Do, asks questions about behavioral characteristics of superior learners that parents may have observed at home. The instrument is sent to the parents of all students. The information can serve as input into the formal identification process but it also has value in helping teachers learn about some of the things they might capitalize on in differentiating for all students. Pay special attention to the cover letter that accompanies the instrument! It avoids the G-word and should be sent out on general school stationary rather than as a gifted program communication.
The cover letter and instrument can be found in the Resources folder in the Schoolwide Enrichment Model section of this website.
