Project M3 provides 12 units of mathematics for talented students in grades 3, 4, and 5.

Overview

Curriculum and Instruction

  • 12 units of mathematics for talented students in grades 3, 4, and 5
  • 4 units per grade level: Number, Algebraic Reasoning, Geometry and Measurement, and Data Analysis and Probability based on NCTM content Standards
  • Emphasis on mathematical discourse within the classroom
  • Emphasis on problem solving and spirit of inquiry
  • Differentiation of selected units for use with all students in years 4 and 5
  • All materials to implement the curriculum will be provided including manipulatives and supplemental resources

Professional Development

  • Two week summer institute during each summer
    Year 1 dates are July 7-18, 2003.
  • Approximately 4 inservice days throughout the school year with substitute fees included
  • Ongoing technical support and coaching
  • Internet portal for ongoing professional development and communication
  • Yearly stipends for teachers

Data Gathering: Year 1

  • Identification of students (Current second graders for fall program and current third graders for comparison group) Spring 2003
  • Instruments: Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test, Teacher Recommendation including checklist of behaviors and student performance
  • Pre and post testing (School year 2003-2004)
  • Instruments: Mathematics Portion of the Iowa Test of Basic Skills, Math Attitude and Interest Scales, Open-ended response items from TIMSS and NAEP tests, Criterion-Referenced Unit Tests

Evaluation Component

  • Analysis of pre and post test data
  • Yearly questionnaires for teachers on the success of program components
  • Yearly focus groups for students
  • Site visits that include interviews with teachers and administrators
