Legislative Update

Special thanks to Jane Clarenbach of NAGC and Ken Dickson of CEC-TAG for providing the information for Legislative Update

August 2009

Thanks to everyone's efforts, both the House and Senate have included funding for Javits at last year's level. Nice work everyone. While the budget has not been finalized, both houses of Congress have the same amount listed for Javits, so we are confident it will be included in the final funding.

July 14, 2009

The House Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor-HHS-Education allocated $0 for the Javits gifted and talented program in its Fiscal Year 2010 appropriations bill.  The bill now goes to the full House Appropriations Committee for final markup on Friday, July 17.

If your Representative is a member of the House Appropriations Committee
please send him/her a letter in support of funding for the Javits program
before close of business on July 16.

The Committee may make changes (hence the term “mark-up”) to a subcommittee bill before approving legislation that will then be submitted to the House of Representatives for a floor vote.

Please add your own experiences and views to the suggested letter on the LAC.  You might include an explanation of why it’s so important to support advanced students and why we need federal support for all students, even those who appear not to struggle in school.  If you have examples of how your local school district benefits from the Javits-funded research, or from the information available from the National Research Center on the Gifted and Talented, be sure to include it in your email.
